Almost all of the images in these three portfolios are made using a mid-20th-century 4x5 or 8x10 bellows camera. The exposures usually take place in very dim light and consequently range anywhere from 3 minutes to 3 hours and are made with anything from the kitchen stove light to the strong, full light of the winter moon. Because the film is allowed to "see" the scene for so long, elements of the scene that are absolutely lost to the human eye at the time of exposure are revealed in lavish detail after the negative has been processed. This shooting in the gloaming is a very particular visual vocabulary, primarily because one never sees the scene at the time of shooting exactly as it will eventually appear on the film. These web galleries constitute a sort of image inventory to share quickly what I've been shooting. Images that exist as finished prints available for purchase are listed at the "Currently Available Prints" link below. Prices generally range from $325 for a 16x20 open edition print to $2000 for a plexi-mounted 30x38 inch print in a limited edition of 12 or 15. Please email mj@mjsharp.com about the specific image that interests you, and I'll let you know what's available for that image. |
