Pity my girlfriend, who spent two years afraid to move anything on the kitchen counters. I was mesmerized by the reactions of ants and fruit flies to various comestibles left to their own decay processes on countertops and cutting boards. In truth I considered the resulting insect visitors to be honored guests, as well as, to borrow a term from the film world, "the talent." My girlfriend's weary refrain whenever she was in the kitchen became, "Can I clean this, or is it art?"
